A stage for the whole village

“La Notte dei Briganti”, a theatrical show in the woods, was created with the aim of recreating, as faithfully as possible, the atmosphere, the landscape and the living conditions in southern Italy around the mid‑1800s. It tells a fragment of our history: Brigantaggio, a period that is little known or often portrayed in a superficial way.
The “brigantesse” proved often fiercer than the men, skilled in handling knives and rifles. They had boundless courage and acted with passion. They were heroines—sometimes cruel, sometimes submissive, but more often independent and free.
“Donne del brigante” and “brigantesse” helped shape the role of women in the rural classes of southern Italy in the second half of the nineteenth century. This XIX Edition, “Chellina, storia di battaglia e libertà”, of La Notte dei Briganti in Alberobello is inspired by and dedicated to them.

The story unfolds, as every year, in several scenes, in which around 100 actors portray events connected with Brigantaggio and the context of post‑Unification southern Italy. It is a beautiful experience at sunset, set in the grounds of Masseria Calmiero from 1792.

Ongoing local traditions

Experiences like this are just a glimpse of Alberobello’s vibrant cultural life. Throughout the year, local initiatives and events bring the village to life, inviting visitors to witness performances, festivals, and traditions firsthand. Every visit offers the chance to share in the community’s stories, laughter, and creativity, making each moment here truly unforgettable.
